Ideas for Implementing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) into Your Business

When it comes to running a successful 21st-century business, corporate social responsibility must be a key facet. In fact, it should underpin all aspects of business operations. Not only does it drive employee attraction and retention but it also drives business for both B2B and B2C companies. People want to do business with companies that are socially responsible.

Take a look at these statistics:

Nearly 70% of employees won’t work for a company that lacks a strong sense of purpose.

77% of consumers want to purchase from companies that strive to make the world a better place.

If you understand the value of developing a CSR mission for your business but are overwhelmed at the thought of where or how to begin, it’s important to remember that “go big or go home” doesn’t apply here. Even small steps toward positive social and environmental change can make a profound impact.

Here are some ideas to get you started!

  • Get everyone involved! Don’t leave your CSR mission up to your top executives. Survey all employees and learn which social and environmental causes are important to them. Then, narrow down ideas to the top contenders. Gather ideas from everyone about which local, national or global organizations they admire that your company can partner with or how they think your team can make a difference in these areas. This process will give you the opportunity to learn a lot more about your employees and will grow their loyalty to your company. Plus, when everyone has the opportunity to weigh in on your CSR mission, it’s sure to be a natural fit for your company.
  • Make a list of businesses in your community that need volunteers. It might be a homeless shelter, a soup kitchen, an assisted living facility, an elementary school, etc. Does one of these opportunities align particularly well with your company values and CSR mission? Sign up to volunteer on a regular basis. Consider getting everyone out of the office by dedicating one day a month to volunteering together. Not only will you experience the joy of making a local impact but you’ll also grow as a team!
  • Think green. If your team is concerned about environmental issues, you will want to address your company’s environmental impact in your CSR policy. There are countless ways you can reduce your carbon footprint and it’s easy to start small.

Here are just a few ideas:

corporate social responsibilityReduce emissions by encouraging your employees to bike to the office. Allow them to arrive 30 minutes late and get paid for that time so they don’t have to stay after hours and make it up.

Swap out your light bulbs for energy-efficient bulbs and fixtures. Be conscious of turning off lights when you leave the room. Better yet, install motion-activated lights.
